Family questions why injured victim was taken far hospital despite closer options after deadly crash.
It was a routine Sunday morning for Navjot Singh, deputy secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, and his wife. After visiting Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, they rode a motorcycle to Karnataka Bhavan for lunch. But their return home took a tragic turn near Dhaula Kuan, when a BMW X5 hit them. Singh died; his wife was gravely injured.
The family is now asking difficult questions. Why were the victims taken not to nearby hospitals like AIIMS or Safdarjung, but instead transported some 22 kilometres away to Nulife Hospital, GTB Nagar? Singh was declared dead on arrival. His wife remained unconscious for hours and was reportedly kept in the lobby while someone with minor injuries arriving later was given a room.
Navnoor Singh, their son, says he repeatedly asked hospital staff where the driver was; it took about five hours for him to learn she was admitted in the same facility. He also claims the vehicle driver’s family has connections with Nulife Hospital which only raises more concerns. The woman driver of the BMW is now in hospital as well.
Police say they will record the statement from Navjot’s wife once she is stable. Meanwhile, friends and public observers are calling for accountability around emergency medical response times and hospital selection during crises. Could better choices have saved Navjot’s life? That’s the question haunting the family and many in Delhi today.
