Just days before India’s Republic Day celebrations, a serious security incident unfolded in the national capital, raising concerns among law enforcement agencies. The Delhi Police Crime Branch arrested a 45-year-old woman for allegedly using forged diplomatic number plates to move freely across high-security and diplomatic areas of the city.
Acting on a specific intelligence input, police teams laid a trap in the Vasant Vihar area, a zone that houses several foreign missions and sensitive government installations. Security checks had already been intensified ahead of Republic Day, making the timing of the incident particularly alarming.
The woman was intercepted while driving a Toyota Innova fitted with number plates designed to resemble official diplomatic registrations. When asked to present ownership documents and vehicle clearance papers, she failed to provide any valid proof. A detailed inspection of the vehicle led to the recovery of multiple forged embassy number plates.
Investigators revealed that the accused is a resident of Guwahati, Assam. During questioning, she claimed that she had purchased the vehicle through an embassy auction in 2024. According to her statement, the original diplomatic registration was withdrawn due to improper documentation, after which she allegedly resorted to using fake plates to avoid police scrutiny.
Police officials said the forged plates allowed her to bypass routine security checks and enter restricted areas without raising suspicion. Authorities are now examining how long she had been operating the vehicle in this manner and whether any larger network was involved.
During interrogation, the woman also claimed association with a political organisation and stated that she had previously worked as a consultant for a foreign embassy. She further claimed to be involved in education consultancy services for international students, though these assertions are still under verification.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The vehicle, forged number plates, mobile phone, and related documents have been seized. The accused has been remanded to police custody as investigators continue examining digital records and financial trails.
Officials stressed that incidents like these highlight the importance of strict vigilance during national events. Security agencies remain on high alert to prevent misuse of diplomatic symbols that could threaten public safety.
