Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: India’s First Overnight High-Speed Rail Begins

Date: Jan 12, 2026 | Source: Fela News

India is about to transform long-distance overnight rail travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, the country’s first semi-high-speed sleeper train, set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17, 2026. The train will operate between Kamakhya (Guwahati) in Assam and Howrah (Kolkata) in West Bengal, covering nearly 1,000 kilometers in just 14 to 15 hours.

This new service finally fills a long-standing gap in Indian Railways. Until now, travelers between Northeast India and Kolkata had to choose between slow overnight trains that took up to 19 hours or expensive flights. The Vande Bharat Sleeper offers the best of both worlds — speed, comfort, and affordability.

Built for Speed and Sleep

Unlike traditional sleeper trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is designed for 180 km/h operations. Developed by BEML using Integral Coach Factory technology, the train passed high-speed trials in December 2025, proving it can operate smoothly even at top speeds with minimal vibration.

Advanced suspension systems, improved bogies, and modern track upgrades allow the train to run faster while remaining quiet and stable, a critical factor for overnight journeys where sleep quality matters.

Modern Coaches and Premium Comfort

The 16-coach train can carry 823 passengers across three classes:

  • 11 AC 3-Tier coaches

  • 4 AC 2-Tier coaches

  • 1 First Class AC coach

Each berth is designed specifically for overnight travel, featuring:

  • Ergonomic mattresses

  • Reading lights

  • USB and charging ports

  • Secure luggage space

  • Privacy curtains

  • Automatic doors and climate control

These upgrades make the experience far superior to traditional sleeper trains.

Evening Departure, Morning Arrival

The timetable is designed for maximum convenience. Passengers board in the evening and arrive early morning, saving a full day of travel. Major stops include Bandel, Malda Town, New Jalpaiguri, Coochbehar, and Bongaigaon, improving access across Assam and West Bengal.

This makes the train ideal for business travelers, families, students, and medical patients traveling between the Northeast and Kolkata.

Affordable Alternative to Flights

The Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to be priced between conventional AC trains and airline fares, likely in the ₹2,500 - ₹5,000 range depending on class. For families and groups, this is far cheaper than flying while offering significantly more comfort than standard trains.

Each coach costs about ₹8–8.5 crore, making large-scale production economical. Indian Railways plans to introduce 12 new Vande Bharat Sleeper trains every year starting 2026.

Local Food and High-Tech Safety

Passengers will be served regional cuisine:

  • Assamese dishes on Guwahati departures

  • Bengali meals on Howrah services

Safety is enhanced by the Kavach automatic train protection system, modern driver controls, and upgraded high-speed tracks, ensuring secure overnight operation.

Why It Matters?

The Vande Bharat Sleeper will significantly improve connectivity between Kolkata and Northeast India, boosting tourism, healthcare access, education, and business travel. From Assam’s wildlife parks to Kolkata’s hospitals and universities, the train creates a fast, reliable, and comfortable link between two major regions.

The Future of Indian Rail Travel

With its combination of speed, sleep, and affordability, the Vande Bharat Sleeper signals a new direction for Indian Railways. It proves that long-distance travel in India can be modern, comfortable, and efficient—all at once.
