‘Tipu–Shivaji Row Escalates: BJP, Owaisi Lock Horns Over History, Hurt Sentiment

Date: Feb 16, 2026 | Source: Fela News

A fierce political dispute has erupted in Nagpur, Maharashtra, after Harshwardhan Sapkal, the state Congress chief, made remarks likening the 18th-century ruler Tipu Sultan with Maratha icon Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, triggering widespread backlash and protests from political rivals and community groups.

Controversial Comparison Sparks Outrage

Sapkal’s statements, suggesting that Tipu Sultan belongs “to the same league of valour” as Shivaji Maharaj, immediately drew strong criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party and right-wing organisations, who viewed the comparison as offensive and hurtful to public sentiment. Demonstrations quickly spread across cities including Nagpur, Nashik, Pune, and Sangli.

Protests Turn Violent in Pune

In front of Congress Bhavan in Pune, large crowds gathered to condemn the remarks. Tensions escalated when stone pelting broke out between supporters and protesters, injuring several people, including two women constables, journalists, and party workers. Police intervened to restore order.

Political Leaders Square Off

The BJP demanded Sapkal’s resignation, accusing him of distorting history and deliberately creating societal division. Party leaders argued that equating Tipu Sultan with Shivaji Maharaj disrespected the legacy of prominent historical figures revered differently by various communities.

Meanwhile, leaders from the All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen defended Tipu Sultan’s legacy. They highlighted his resistance against British colonial forces and criticised the criticism as politically motivated.

Congress Denies Intent to Offend

Sapkal and party representatives have maintained that his comments were taken out of context and twisted to provoke unrest. In a press briefing in Wardha, the MPCC chief accused the BJP of manipulating his remarks for political gain and injecting communal tension into public discourse.

Wider Debate on History and Identity

The controversy has reignited debates across Maharashtra and beyond about how historical figures should be remembered and discussed in the public sphere. Both Shivaji Maharaj and Tipu Sultan occupy complex places in Indian history; disputes over their interpretation have previously led to similar rows in politics and public life.

The Bottom Line

A contentious comparison between two historical figures has transformed into a broader political conflict, drawing protests, injuries, and heated exchanges between major parties. With no clear resolution yet, the debate illustrates how deeply history can influence modern politics and public sentiment in India.
