Prada Partners With Indian Artisans After Kolhapuri Backlash Controversy

Luxury fashion house Prada has taken a significant step toward cultural sensitivity and ethical design after facing widespread backlash for featuring footwear resembling traditional Kolhapuri chappals without proper acknowledgment of their origin and makers. In response to public outcry and concerns from artisan groups, the Italian brand has announced a collaboration with Indian craftsmen to launch a limited-edition sandal collection that respects the legacy of this iconic Indian craft. 

The controversy began when Prada showcased open-toe sandals at its Milan Fashion Week event that closely mirrored the design of Kolhapuri chappals hand-crafted leather footwear with centuries-old roots in Maharashtra and recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in India. Critics argued that the brand did not acknowledge the inspiration or the cultural heritage behind the design, leading to accusations of cultural appropriation. 

After the criticism, which was amplified online and in Indian media, Prada moved to address the concerns head-on. The company revealed plans to work with artisan communities in Maharashtra and Karnataka to produce a new range of sandals inspired by the Kolhapuri tradition this time with proper credit, fair compensation, and direct involvement of local artisans in the creative process. 

According to Prada’s announcement, the limited-edition collection priced around $930 (approximately ₹7,500) will be manufactured in India and feature authentic craftsmanship combined with Prada’s design aesthetics. The collaboration is part of a broader, three-year partnership that includes artisan training programs aimed at helping preserve traditional techniques while reaching global luxury markets. 

This move marks an important moment in how global brands engage with indigenous art forms. Rather than simply borrowing design elements for trendiness, Prada’s strategy now emphasizes cultural respect, economic inclusion, and sustainable creative exchange values that resonate deeply with supporters of India’s rich artisanal heritage.
