Politics Heat Up Suvendu Adhikari Serves Defamation Legal Notice

Date: Jan 10, 2026 | Source: Fela News

A fierce political confrontation has unfolded in West Bengal after Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari issued a legal notice to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of making baseless and defamatory allegations linking him to an alleged coal smuggling scam. The dispute has intensified political tensions in the state at a time when the atmosphere is already charged ahead of key political developments.

The controversy began following public remarks made by Mamata Banerjee while addressing ongoing investigations into alleged coal smuggling and money laundering activities. During her statements, the Chief Minister questioned the role of central investigative agencies and suggested that proceeds from the alleged scam were connected to senior national leaders. She also implied the existence of a wider network that included Adhikari, remarks that sparked immediate backlash from the opposition leader.

Responding strongly, Suvendu Adhikari denied all allegations and described them as an attempt to malign his image for political gain. In his legal notice, he demanded that Mamata Banerjee produce concrete proof to substantiate her claims within seventy two hours. He warned that failure to do so would compel him to initiate formal defamation proceedings against her. Adhikari maintained that the accusations were irresponsible and designed to divert attention from ongoing investigations involving figures linked to the ruling party.

The notice, served through his legal counsel, accuses the Chief Minister of making reckless public statements without evidence. According to Adhikari, such remarks not only damage his personal reputation but also undermine democratic discourse. His move has further intensified the already strained political climate between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.

Mamata Banerjee has defended her statements, asserting that she was merely fulfilling her responsibility to speak out against alleged corruption. She has rejected claims that her remarks were defamatory and has repeatedly argued that central agencies are being misused for political purposes. At public meetings, she has continued to criticise investigative actions, portraying them as targeted and unfair.

The political clash comes amid recent Enforcement Directorate raids at multiple locations in Kolkata linked to a political consultancy firm and associated entities. The agency has accused Banerjee of obstructing its work during the searches, an allegation she firmly denies, stating that she was safeguarding party related documents.

As both sides harden their positions, leaders from rival parties are using the controversy to mobilise supporters. With the deadline for a response to the legal notice approaching, political observers believe the episode could influence public perception and shape the narrative in West Bengal’s evolving political landscape.
