India has ample reserves of essential commodities — including food, fertilisers, and fuel — and supply chains remain fully functional, with no disruption or price hikes reported, officials said on Friday following a review with state authorities. According to officials, transportation by rail, road, and air cargo is operating without interruption, and prices in nearly 500 monitored markets remain stable, with daily restocking continuing smoothly. Authorities urged citizens, particularly in northern states, to avoid panic buying.
Indian Oil Corporation also reassured the public via social media that fuel and LPG supplies were stable and widely available at their outlets across the country.
An interministerial panel assessed the availability of key goods, such as cereals and fertilisers, as millions of farmers gear up for the kharif sowing season, critical to national food security. This followed a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure stability in supplies and prices amid geopolitical tensions.
Following India’s retaliatory missile strikes on Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, the government has been coordinating with agricultural market bodies to curb profiteering. Officials said the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) could be invoked if needed, although current conditions don’t warrant it.
Reports of hoarding have emerged in some northern cities like Jammu, Jaipur, and Srinagar, despite government assurances of adequate supplies. A food ministry official noted that over 25 million tonnes of wheat have been recently procured, and national stocks remain abundant.
India’s total foodgrain reserves stand at 66.17 million tonnes, according to Rahul Chauhan of iGrain Pvt Ltd. The strikes on Pakistan were followed by retaliatory attacks, which defence minister Rajnath Singh said were successfully countered by Indian forces.
