Heavy Rain, Snow Lash Himachal As Weather System Activates

Date: Feb 03, 2026 | Source: Fela News

Heavy rain and snowfall have struck large parts of Himachal Pradesh as a powerful western disturbance became active over the region, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported. From lower valleys to high mountain passes, communities experienced dramatic weather shifts over the past day, with authorities warning of possible travel disruptions and heightened risk of landslides in vulnerable areas.

The IMD’s forecast indicated that the western disturbance a weather system that typically brings moisture from the Mediterranean region into northern India intensified as it moved across the Himalayas, leading to widespread precipitation. Residents in popular hill towns such as Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala reported steady rain at lower elevations and significant snowfall at higher altitudes, creating scenic landscapes but also challenging conditions for daily life.

Road connectivity in several mountainous districts was affected, with snow accumulation slowing down traffic and prompting authorities to issue advisories for travellers. In certain areas, snowplough operations were deployed to clear key routes, while local administration teams prepared emergency response units in case of road blockages or weather-related incidents. Roads leading to high-altitude passes saw intermittent closures as safety assessments were carried out.

Schools and small markets in snow-affected towns reported lower footfall, as residents weighed the risks of travelling in deteriorating weather conditions. For tourists, while snowfall brought picturesque views often sought after in winter, officials urged caution and advised visitors to check weather updates and road conditions before planning travel to remote destinations.

The IMD also highlighted the potential for isolated thunderstorms and hail in the plains adjoining the hills as the system progressed. Farmers in foothill regions were advised to take preventive measures to protect crops and livestock from sudden weather changes. Cold wave conditions were observed in many parts, with temperatures dipping below normal for this time of year, prompting health advisories for vulnerable populations, especially the elderly and children.

Local authorities coordinated with state disaster management teams to monitor vulnerable zones prone to landslides due to water saturation and freezing conditions in higher reaches. Community helplines were activated, and volunteers mobilised to assist people in hard-to-reach locations if needed. Traffic police and public works departments worked around the clock to ensure essential connectivity and help stranded travellers.

While the western disturbance is expected to weaken over the next couple of days, its impact on Himachal Pradesh’s weather will remain for a short while, with residual chill and intermittent showers expected. Residents and visitors alike are advised to stay informed, follow official advisories, and prioritise safety as the region adapts to the ongoing winter conditions.
