Gwalior Outrage Worms Found In Kids Government Syrup Batch

Date: Oct 17, 2025 | Source: Fela News

In a shocking revelation that has rattled parents and health officials alike, worms were discovered in a bottle of government-supplied antibiotic syrup meant for children in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. The incident was reported by a mother who visited the maternity hospital in the Murar area and, upon opening the medicine bottle, saw black worm-like particles floating inside. She promptly raised the alarm with hospital authorities and the district’s civil surgeon.

The implicated medication is Azithromycin Oral Suspension a commonly used antibiotic for children which was being distributed through a government health scheme. Authorities immediately halted the distribution of the affected batch and launched a formal investigation, with local drug inspectors collecting samples from the hospital’s stores. The Drug Department, acting on the complaint, has suspended distribution of that batch from the central supplier store in Bhopal, and sent samples for laboratory testing at the state lab.

Health officials are now scrambling to trace the distribution of this batch across other districts, fearing that the contamination may not be isolated. In the meanwhile, samples of other pediatric drugs in the hospital have also been collected as a precautionary measure. The department is treating this as a serious public health lapse, alerting all district health units across Madhya Pradesh to be vigilant and suspend use if similar anomalies are found.

This incident has triggered outrage among parents and civil society groups, who demand accountability and transparency from those responsible for procurement, storage, and distribution of essential medicines. The presence of worms in a children’s antibiotic raises severe questions about quality control, supply chain safety, and monitoring mechanisms. Families say that trust in public health programmes is at stake if such glaring lapses occur in life-saving medicines for children, many will be forced to seek private alternatives at additional cost.

As the laboratory results are awaited, officials must also explain how the contamination occurred whether during manufacturing, transport, or storage and take swift remedial action to prevent recurrence. This case underscores the critical need for rigorous checks, frequent audits, and stricter accountability in government health supply chains, especially where vulnerable populations (like children) are concerned.
