Following a devastating fire that killed 25 people at a popular Goa nightclub, the state government has cracked down on associated properties ordering demolition of the illegal beach shack linked with the club. The nightclub in question is Birch by Romeo Lane, part of the chain owned by the controversial Luthra brothers.
The tragedy has sparked outrage across the state investigations revealed that the club was built with flammable materials, had a narrow single entry/exit, lacked mandatory fire-safety clearances, and reportedly ignored building permissions. On the fateful night, pyrotechnics were used during a dance event, and things quickly spiralled out of control.
The death toll 25 includes both staff and tourists. Many victims worked in the kitchen or basement areas, where ventilation and escape routes were either inadequate or nonexistent. Rescue teams reportedly struggled to reach the site in time because of narrow access roads.
In response, the government has ordered demolition of the illegal shack. Authorities have already sealed other properties belonging to the same group, and a magisterial inquiry has been launched to investigate the incident. Meanwhile, law-enforcement agencies are searching for the club’s owners, who are currently absconding.
The crackdown reflects growing intolerance towards businesses that flout safety rules just to turn a profit especially when lives are at risk. It serves as a stark warning to other establishments: corners cut today can cost tragedies tomorrow.
