Former Maharashtra Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has refused to apologise for his remarks on Operation Sindoor triggering a fresh political storm in New Delhi and other parts of the country. The controversy began after Chavan questioned the conduct and outcome of the military operation stating that India suffered significant setbacks on the very first day.
Speaking to reporters in Pune Chavan stood firm on his comments and rejected demands for an apology. He said there was no question of apologising and defended his right to question government decisions under the Constitution. The senior leader stressed that constructive criticism is an essential part of democracy and should not be seen as disrespect towards the armed forces.
Chavan’s comments focused on his claim that India was completely defeated during the initial aerial engagement of Operation Sindoor. The operation was launched in May following a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam Jammu and Kashmir. He suggested that Indian aircraft were shot down and that the Air Force was grounded due to strong resistance from Pakistan. According to him these developments raise serious concerns about planning preparedness and execution.
The Bharatiya Janata Party reacted sharply to the remarks. Several party leaders accused Chavan of weakening national morale and insulting the bravery of the armed forces. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described the comments as shocking and said they reflected a larger problem in the opposition’s approach to national security. He also linked the remarks to similar statements made earlier by other Congress leaders claiming it showed a recurring pattern rather than an isolated opinion.
Union minister Giriraj Singh also criticised Chavan’s statements calling them an insult to the military. He said no individual has the right to question or undermine the valour of the armed forces and warned that such remarks could damage public trust in defence institutions.
The Congress party while supporting its leader’s right to express views has tried to strike a balance by reiterating its respect and support for the armed forces. The episode once again highlights how issues related to national security quickly become emotionally charged and politically sensitive in India particularly during a heated political climate.
