US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in his thinly veiled attack, warned China against blocking a resolution to designate terrorists under UNSC’s 1267 list.
Addressing a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) Counter-Terrorism Committee in Mumbai, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, "all relevant parties should support these resolutions and no nation should stand in their way".
Blinken said member states should support the resolutions to designate terrorists under the UNSC’s 1267 list.
The 1267 list is maintained by the committee formed in 1999 under the UNSC.
The committee allows the UN member states to add to the list the name of any group affiliated with Al Qaeda or ISIS as a terrorist group.
Bliken’s statement was directed towards China, which had blocked the proposal by India and the US to blacklist Pakistan-based militant and Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed’s son, Hafiz Talah Saeed.
Recalling the horrors of the Mumbai attack, Antony Blinken said, “Six US citizens were among those who died in the November 2008 terror attacks in the city”.
“We stand in solidarity with India and all nations that lost people on that day. But we must do more than mourning. We have the responsibility to the victims and people everywhere to bring justice to the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks and their masterminds,” Blinken noted.
This is why the United States is working with India and other partners for 14 years because when we allow the architects of these attacks to go unpunished, we send a message to terrorists everywhere that their heinous will be tolerated,” he added.
