The United States has renewed its travel advisory for Bangladesh, maintaining a 'Level 3: Reconsider Travel' alert and a stricter 'Level 4: Do Not Travel' warning for the Chittagong Hill Tracts due to heightened security threats. The Level 4 advisory, updated on April 18, highlights dangers in Khagrachari, Rangamati, and Bandarban districts, citing past incidents of terrorism, political violence, IED attacks, and kidnappings—some targeting minorities.

U.S. government staff are prohibited from entering the region, and prior permission from Bangladesh's Home Ministry is required. The advisory warns travelers to avoid the area entirely. While political tensions have decreased following the formation of an interim government in mid-2024, the advisory urges caution, noting protests could still turn violent.

Common crimes like theft, muggings, and drug-related offenses remain concerns in urban areas. Emergency support for U.S. citizens, especially beyond Dhaka, may be limited due to poor infrastructure and restricted access.

The advisory follows the recent killing of Hindu leader Bhabesh Chandra Roy, who was abducted from his Dinajpur home and later found dead, underscoring growing security concerns in the country.
