penAI Launches Codex AI Coding Agent in ChatGPT: Key Highlights in 5 Points

  1. What is Codex?
OpenAI has introduced its new AI-powered coding assistant, Codex, during a recent live stream. Integrated into ChatGPT, Codex can perform a range of software development tasks simultaneously. It can write features, fix bugs, respond to questions about a project’s codebase, and more—all within secure, individual sandbox environments tied to the user’s repository.

  2. Powered by o3-Based Model:
Codex runs on a custom-built version of OpenAI’s o3 reasoning model, known as codex-1. This model has been optimized specifically for software engineering through reinforcement learning on real-world coding scenarios. It produces human-like code, adheres closely to instructions, and can autonomously test its output until it passes.

  3. Who Can Access It?
The rollout of Codex has begun for ChatGPT Pro, Enterprise, and Team plan users. These tiers will be the first to experience the tool’s full capabilities. OpenAI also plans to expand access to ChatGPT Plus and educational users, though a specific release timeline hasn’t been announced.

  4. How to Use Codex:
Users can access Codex from the ChatGPT sidebar. By choosing “Code,” you can assign development tasks, while the “Ask” feature lets you query or clarify code-related issues. Each task is processed independently within its own configured workspace.

  5. Task Execution and Output:
Codex performs tasks in isolated environments—usually completing them in 1 to 30 minutes. It can modify files, run tests, and execute commands like linters and type checkers. Once done, it logs all actions, enabling transparent review. Developers can view terminal outputs, inspect changes, raise pull requests, or sync the updates with their development setup.
