Apple expands iPhone manufacturing in India as Tata’s Hosur plant begins production and Foxconn’s Bengaluru facility prepares to ship iPhone 16 models. The move
Apple has ramped up iPhone production in India as part of its strategy to reduce reliance on China. A new Tata Electronics facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, has recently begun assembling older iPhone models, while a Foxconn plant near Bengaluru is set to start shipments in May 2025.
This move comes amid rising US-China trade tensions and the threat of tariffs exceeding 100% on Chinese imports under President Trump, which could disrupt Apple’s supply chain and raise prices.
The $2.6 billion Foxconn facility, still under construction, will manufacture iPhone 16 and 16e models with an initial output of 300–500 units per hour. It is expected to be fully operational by 2027, employing around 50,000 workers. Reuters reports that Apple plans to shift most US-bound iPhone production to India by 2026.
India currently accounts for about 18% of global iPhone production, compared to China’s 75%. In March alone, Apple shipped $2 billion worth of iPhones to the US from India, setting new records for Tata and Foxconn. Apple aims to produce over 60 million iPhones annually in India by 2026.
