ChatGPT has taken a direct shot at Google by integrating shopping links into its responses, signaling a serious push into the search engine space. OpenAI announced it is experimenting with streamlining product discovery, comparison, and purchasing through ChatGPT. This move could threaten Google’s core revenue stream, which relies heavily on product-related ad clicks.
According to OpenAI, the new shopping feature enhances responses with images, prices, reviews, and direct buying links—though it emphasized that these are not advertisements. The rollout has begun for all users globally, including Free, Plus, Pro, and even those not logged in.
A demo shared by OpenAI shows horizontally scrollable product results, similar to Google’s ads. Clicking an item opens a detailed card listing stores and reviews to assist buying decisions.
While Google monetizes product queries heavily, ChatGPT had so far been limited to information-based responses. With commerce features now added, ChatGPT could become a go-to for users, impacting Google’s traffic and ad revenue.
Google has begun adding AI-generated summaries in its search results, but ChatGPT’s rapid growth—it’s now the fifth most visited website—makes it a serious contender in the search space.
