Japan’s fourth seed Haruka Kaji defeated India’s Aditi Rawat 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of the $30,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Baliyawas. Despite her promising game, the 17-year-old Aditi, playing only her sixth ITF event, couldn’t match Kaji’s experience and skill.
On a brighter note for India, Shruti Ahlawat upset Japan’s fifth seed Akiko Omae 6-3, 4-6, [10-8] to qualify for the main draw. Pooja Ingale also advanced after Akanksha Nitture retired due to illness.
In doubles, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Vaidehi Chaudhari clinched a thrilling 4-6, 7-6(4), [10-3] win, while Riya Bhatia and Ekaterina Yashina also moved to the quarterfinals.
Indian tennis fans now look forward to more strong performances as the tournament progresses.
