Pakistan’s General Elections Set for Late January 2024, Election Commission Announces

Pakistan’s Election Commission has officially declared that the general elections in the country will occur during the last week of January 2024. This announcement follows the premature dissolution of the National Assembly on August 9, triggering the constitutional requirement for elections to be held within 90 days.

The previous government, shortly before the conclusion of its term, had stated that elections could only proceed after a new census was conducted and new constituency boundaries were established.

In a recent statement, the electoral body reported that it has been diligently working on the delimitation of constituencies. The initial list for the delimitation of constituencies is set to be published on September 27. Subsequently, the final list will be issued on November 30 after considering objections and suggestions from stakeholders.

This decision to expedite the delimitation process comes in response to mounting pressure from various political parties advocating for timely elections. The Constitution mandates that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) complete the delimitation process within 120 days, and this accelerated timeline aims to meet that requirement.
