Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Election Results Awaited as Counting Begins

Election results for the four central panel positions of president, vice president, secretary, and joint secretary of the Delhi University Students Union are anticipated to be released shortly after the beginning of the counting of ballots on Saturday. There are 24 candidates running for office.

The most recent DUSU elections took place in 2019. Due to COVID-19, the elections could not be held in 2020 or 2021, and they might not have been held in 2022 due to potential delays to the academic calendar.

Chander Shekhar, the main election officer, reported a 42 percent voter participation at the university. Students could cast ballots in the election totaling over a lakh.

Although the turnout was better than in 2019, when a total of 39.90% was recorded, it fell short of exceeding the nearly 11-year-high figure of 2018. In 2018 and 2017, the turnouts were 44.46 and 42.8 percent, respectively.

EVMs were used to conduct the central panel elections at 52 colleges and departments, whereas paper ballots were used for the college union elections.

The main concerns for students included fee increases, a lack of affordable housing, increased security at college festivals, and menstruation leaves.

These surveys serve as a means of assessing the attitudes of young voters, just like many groups supported by political parties. Given that this year’s elections were held just months before the Lok Sabha polls.

The RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) claimed victory in 34 colleges, while the Congress-affiliated National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) claimed win in 17.

Candidates for all four central positions were put forth by the ABVP, NSUI, CPI(M)-backed Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and the CPI(ML)-affiliated All India Students’ Association (AISA). In the 2019 elections, the ABVP took home three of the four seats.

The primary governing organisation for the majority of colleges and faculties is DUSU. Additionally, each college has a unique students’ union, for which elections are held each year.
