U.S. President Joe Biden Raises Concerns Over Killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar with PM Modi During G20

Amidst growing tensions between India and Canada concerning the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, recent reports suggest that U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders addressed their concerns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 meeting earlier this month.

A report from the Financial Times reveals that during the G20 meeting, several members of the “Five Eyes” intelligence-sharing network, which includes the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, raised the issue of the June killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Sikh separatist leader in British Columbia, with Prime Minister Modi.

The leaders chose to intervene at the G20 summit following Canada’s call for its allies to engage directly with Modi regarding the case.

Notably, the White House has not yet responded to these reports.

Tensions between India and Canada began escalating shortly after the G20 summit, held on September 9 and 10. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused India of involvement in Nijjar’s killing, a claim strongly refuted by India as absurd.

This situation has placed some Western nations in a delicate position, as Canada has long been a valuable partner and ally. Simultaneously, these countries are actively seeking to strengthen ties with New Delhi to counterbalance China’s influence in the Asia Pacific region.

In response to these developments, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed deep concern during a White House press briefing. Sullivan stated that the U.S. supports Canada’s investigation into the matter and seeks justice for the perpetrators. However, he did not confirm whether President Joe Biden planned to discuss the issue directly with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Sullivan emphasized the seriousness of the matter, asserting that regardless of the country involved, the U.S. will uphold its fundamental principles and pursue the case diligently. He also highlighted the importance of close consultation with allies like Canada as they proceed with their law enforcement and diplomatic processes.
