Three individuals have been arrested for the alleged gang-rape of a 21-year-old law student inside a Kolkata college premises. The assault reportedly took place on the evening of June 25, between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm in the Kasba area, according to police officials. The accused include two current students and one former student of the same law college.
Police said the two current students were detained from the Talbagan locality on Thursday evening. Interrogation led to the arrest of the former student, who has been identified as the main accused in the case. “All three are currently in custody. We are verifying the roles of each suspect and the extent of their involvement,” said a senior police official. Investigators have begun collecting forensic evidence, and the survivor has undergone a medical examination.
This harrowing incident has drawn eerie parallels with the rape and murder of a post-graduate medical trainee at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August last year. That case had stirred public anger and calls for heightened campus security. Now, with another assault reported within an educational institution, questions are once again being raised about student safety, surveillance mechanisms, and institutional accountability. Student groups and women’s rights activists are demanding swift justice and urgent reforms to prevent such incidents from recurring.
