Tensions Grip Assam’s Dhubri After Communal Violence; 38 Arrested, Curfew Measures Tightened

Communal unrest erupted in Assam’s Dhubri district during Eid celebrations, leading to violent clashes between communities. Tensions intensified following the discovery of a cow’s head outside a Hanuman temple, a move seen as a deliberate provocation. The incident sparked outrage and street-level confrontations, prompting authorities to step in with strict measures. A total of 38 people were arrested for allegedly being involved in the violence, and night-time shoot-at-sight orders were enforced to contain the situation.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the affected areas, assuring residents that firm action would be taken against those inciting communal disharmony. He blamed a little-known separatist group, ‘Nabin Bangla’, for spreading provocative posters that called for the merger of Dhubri with Bangladeshan act viewed as a serious threat to regional peace. In response, the administration carried out an immediate reshuffle in the police department. Dhubri’s Superintendent of Police, Navin Singh, was replaced by Leena Doley from Hailakandi to help bring the situation under control.

While the initial violence has been contained and curfew restrictions are being gradually eased, heavy police presence continues across key areas. Authorities are actively investigating the source of the inflammatory materials and monitoring social media for any signs of further incitement. Residents have been urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. The government’s rapid responseincluding arrests, administrative changes, and increased surveillancedemonstrates a strong stance against divisive forces. With tensions slowly subsiding, the focus now is on promoting unity, restoring normal life, and ensuring such flare-ups are prevented in the future.
