Among those detained was a self-proclaimed sergeant major of the outlawed group Prepak, taken into custody from his home in Kontha Ahallup, Imphal East, on Saturday (July 19). Authorities revealed he had undergone basic military training in Tanal, Myanmar, and had recruited a new cadre for the group in October of the previous year.

Additionally, two active members of the banned UPPK outfit were arrested from a market in Kakching on Sunday (July 20) on suspicion of engaging in extortion in the region and nearby areas.

In a separate operation in Imphal West district, three individuals were apprehended from Thangmeib and Khuyathong Polem Leikai on Sunday (July 20) for allegedly being involved in the illegal trade of ammunition. Over 100 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the arrests.

These actions are part of ongoing security crackdowns following ethnic violence that erupted in the state in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities. The unrest has resulted in more than 260 deaths and displaced thousands.

On February 13, the central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The state assembly has since been placed under suspended animation, though its term extends until 2027.
