Shah and JDU Clash Over who picks bihar next CM
Patna is abuzz. On one side is Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on the other the ruling party JD(U). The stage: who will become the next Chief Minister of Bihar. The tension surged when Shah declared that after the election, it will be the elected MLAs who decide who leads the government. He also affirmed that NDA allies will contest under JD(U)’s leadership. But JD(U) didn’t stay quiet they quickly responded, insisting that Nitish Kumar would return as CM if their side wins.
Shah articulated a formula: once the votes are in, all coalition MLAs will elect their party leaders, those leaders will sit down and decide together who gets the Chief Minister’s post. In his words, “elected MLAs … decide who heads the next government.” This, he implied, was a democratic safeguard within coalition politics. And though NDA allies may contest under JD(U)’s banner, the final say he argued lies with those who actually win and take seats.
JD(U) was swift with a rebuttal. A party spokesperson asked: “If we are contesting under Nitish’s leadership, then how can someone else become CM?” Their view: Nitish isn’t just a placeholder he is deeply tied to the mandate. The party calls him their “true representative of the masses” and doesn’t accept any ambiguity over his return. The message was clear: they accept Shah’s alliance framing, but not any attempt to replace Nitish.
Meanwhile, in the background, Congress and the INDIA bloc also weighed in. Congress claimed that with Shah’s statement, he had already made it clear that Nitish “will not be CM.” Others in the opposition saw the controversy as yet another crack in the NDA’s internal unity especially with disagreements over seat distribution, candidate nominations, and strategy already making headlines.
As nominations closed for the first phase of Bihar’s elections (121 seats going to polls on November 6), the coalition seat‐sharing drama intensified. Many seats remain under negotiation, and some have overlapping claims. Meanwhile, VIP (Vikassheel Insaan Party) founder Mukesh Sahani surprisingly chose not to contest, citing a commitment to broader opposition success.
In short: Shah’s push to empower MLAs sparked JDU’s firm defense of Nitish’s role. The contest is not just about votes it’s about symbols, legitimacy, and how coalition politics handle top jobs. After the dust settles, whoever becomes Bihar’s next Chief Minister will need both electoral victory and coalition trust.
