In a case that highlighted the complications of ethnic identity in modern India, the Bombay High Court refused to grant the status of Scheduled Castes (SC) to a student who was raised by her SC mother. The court's decision emphasized that the legal and social purpose of the SC reservation policies is to help those who have fallen victim to systemic discrimination and historical desires.

The Bombay High Court refused to give SC status to a student raised by SC mother, saying that she has not suffered any discrimination or social loss, and thus retained the decision of the caste investigation committee. Although this young petitioner, after the separation of his parents, grew up with his mother-who is a member of the silver community and falls into the SC category-the court concluded that he did not suffer the social depletion that is usually associated with the SC identity.

The Division Bench made it clear that the student's upbringing, education and standard of living do not reflect the reservation to deal with which reservation has been arranged. The court also indicated that the student's mother was not facing any serious economic or social difficulty, which made his demand less justified.

This decision of the court does not question the student's mother's caste, but rather checks whether the student themselves are facing systemic obstacles that this policy wants to end. This reminds of a rigorous truth that caste-based benefits are not inherited like any property, but their purpose is to remove real and direct social inequalities.

This decision is debuting in inter -caste families about the explanation of caste and the use of legal norms in such complex cases. Some people believe that this is a step towards hardening the parameters required to prevent misuse, while others consider it to raise important questions related to identity, affinity and changing structure of Indian society. The case may yet influence future policies and judicial considerations on caste recognition and social justice frameworks.
