A man from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district has been arrested for allegedly leaking sensitive information about army movements during Operation Sindoor to Pakistani intelligence operatives, a senior police official announced on Tuesday (June 3, 2025).
According to police, the accused—identified as Gagandeep Singh, also known as Gagan, a resident of Mohalla Rodupur, Gali Nazar Singh Wali—was in contact with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and received payments in exchange for classified information. A mobile phone containing details shared with Pakistani Intelligence Operatives (PIOs) was also recovered.
The arrest was made during a joint operation by the Tarn Taran police and the Counter Intelligence unit. Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav stated that Gagandeep had longstanding ties with Pakistan-based Khalistani sympathizer Gopal Singh Chawla, who introduced him to the PIOs. The accused reportedly shared sensitive details such as troop positions and strategic sites, posing a serious threat to national security.
“He was in contact with the ISI and Gopal Singh Chawla for around five years,” DGP Yadav posted on X, adding that Gagandeep had received money from PIOs via Indian financial channels. Investigators also found a list of over 20 ISI contacts stored on the seized device.
Authorities have launched detailed financial and technical investigations to uncover the full extent of the espionage network. A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act at City Police Station, Tarn Taran, and the probe is ongoing.
The DGP emphasized that the Punjab Police remains dedicated to defending the nation’s sovereignty and will take strict action against anyone engaged in anti-national activities.
Operation Sindoor, carried out by the Indian armed forces on May 7, involved precision pre-dawn missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir—including the Jaish-e-Mohammad stronghold in Bahawalpur and the Lashkar-e-Taiba base in Muridke. These strikes were in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.
Previously, six individuals—including a woman from Malerkotla—had also been arrested on suspicion of spying for Pakistan.
