AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday strongly criticized Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for his inflammatory comment suggesting “blood would flow in rivers” following the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty. Owaisi reminded Bhutto-Zardari of his loss, pointing out that his mother, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, was a victim of domestic terrorism.
“He’s new to politics and should reflect on who was responsible for his mother’s death,” Owaisi said. “She was killed by terrorists from within Pakistan. If he can’t grasp that reality, how can anyone explain it?”
Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007.
The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 and brokered by the World Bank, allocated the eastern rivers (Sutlej, Beas, Ravi) to India and the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab) to Pakistan. With the treaty now suspended in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26, India is exploring ways to harness the western rivers.
Speaking in Sukkur, Bhutto-Zardari accused India of blaming Pakistan for the Pahalgam attack to distract from internal failures, warning, “Whether water or blood flows in the Indus—it is ours.”
The comment drew sharp condemnation from Indian leaders across party lines.
