Nine men were rescued from the swollen Tawi River in Jammu following a sudden rise in water levels caused by heavy rains that lashed parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The rescue operation was conducted jointly by police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), traffic cops, and local volunteers. One of the rescued, Madan Lal, a laborer trapped near the Jewel Chowk bridge for around two hours during sand extraction, was pulled out using a ladder dropped from the bridge. The remaining eight, including some visiting for ‘Pind Daan’ rituals, were also safely brought out during the operation. Several trapped horses were rescued as well.

Heavy rainfall also led to significant disruption on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, with mudslides blocking the road at Mehad and T2 tunnel in Ramban area early Wednesday morning. The highway was closed for over three hours until debris was cleared by road maintenance teams. Meanwhile, an overflowing stream in Rajouri district caused flood-like conditions in several localities, washing away vehicles parked near the stream banks. The region recorded substantial rainfall in the past 24 hours, with Katra in Reasi district receiving the highest at 108.5 mm, followed by Rajouri, Udhampur, Poonch, and Ramban.

The meteorological department has forecast intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers across Jammu division, with the possibility of heavy rainfall at certain places continuing until June 27. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled in the coming days.
