With just weeks to go for the annual Amarnath Yatra, Indian security agencies have intensified measures following a fresh terror threat in Jammu and Kashmir. The pilgrimage, scheduled from July 3 to August 9, attracts thousands of Hindu devotees who undertake a challenging trek to the 3,880-metre-high cave shrine of Lord Shiva. This year, "Operation Shiva" has been rolled out by security forces to ensure a safe and peaceful yatra, especially after the deadly April attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.

Over 50,000 personnel from central paramilitary forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Indian Army have been deployed across the yatra routes, camps, and vulnerable locations. The implementation of RFID tagging for all registered pilgrims, enabling real-time tracking this year. Surveillance will include body scanners, drones, CCTV cameras, and helicopter monitoring. Operation focused from Srinagar to the Baltal and Pahalgam routes leading to the shrine, all entry and exit points have undergone security audits and 3D mapping.

The April 22 terror attack by Pakistan-linked militants served as a grave warning. Home Minister Amit Shah has instructed all agencies to stay on high alert throughout the 38-day event. A three-tier security grid has been established with anti-sabotage teams, mock drills, and continuous monitoring at every checkpoint. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior officials have reviewed the arrangements. These unprecedented preparations highlight the government’s commitment to protecting devotees while preserving the sanctity of one of India's most revered pilgrimages.
