21 MLAs from Manipur have written to PM Modi and Home Minister Shah demanding the revival of a popular government, warning of rising tensions under President’s
A group of 21 Manipur MLAs has submitted letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging the swift restoration of a “popular government” in the state. These letters, sent on Tuesday and reviewed by Hindustan Times, express growing frustration over the ongoing President’s Rule, which was imposed on February 13, 2025.
The MLAs acknowledged that the initial imposition of President’s Rule was met with public optimism, but claimed that nearly three months later, no meaningful progress has been made toward restoring peace. They warned of rising public unrest and fears of renewed violence, with civil society groups holding protests and criticising the MLAs for failing to act.
The letters stress that re-establishing an elected government is essential for stability, and promise the signatories’ full commitment to peace if reinstated. The group includes 14 BJP MLAs (three of whom were former JD(U) members), three from the NPP, two from the NPF, and two independents.
One MLA claimed they now have backing from 32 legislators, including support from 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, and may move to form a government after May 15 if no action is taken by Delhi.
