Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav slammed Rahul Gandhi for wearing shoes while paying tribute to Indira Gandhi’s statue in Bhopal, calling it disrespect
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) criticized senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for not removing his shoes while paying tribute at a statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, calling it disrespectful to their culture. Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, visited Bhopal for a one-day trip to the state. Upon arrival, he paid floral respects at a life-sized statue of Indira Gandhi outside the state Congress office. A video of the event, showing him wearing shoes during the tribute, circulated widely on social media.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting at the state BJP office, Chief Minister Yadav remarked on the incident.
“The Leader of Opposition has every right to visit our state in a democracy. However, he offered floral tribute to his grandmother without removing his shoes, which I found inappropriate. This goes against our cultural values, and he should be mindful of it,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi’s visit included multiple meetings and the inauguration of the Congress party’s 'Sangthan Srujan Abhiyan' (Organisation Rejuvenation Campaign), aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level ahead of the 2028 state assembly elections.
