In a significant diplomatic development, India and China have agreed to expedite the resumption of direct flights and engage in focused discussions on trade and visa issues. The decision came during a high-level meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, who is visiting New Delhi from June 12 to 13. Both sides emphasized the need to update the Air Services Agreement and initiate measures to facilitate media and think-tank exchanges.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in a statement on Friday, confirmed that the countries will resume certain functional dialogues, particularly in economic and trade sectors, to resolve key concerns. The meeting also included a review of bilateral developments since the last round of talks held in Beijing on January 27. Foreign Secretary Misri expressed hope for enhanced cooperation on trans-border river data sharing and appreciated China’s support in restarting the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a five-year pause.

The yatra, set to begin this month with 750 pilgrims, marks a positive step in rebuilding strained India-China relations, especially following prolonged military tensions in Ladakh. Additionally, both countries welcomed joint activities planned for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. These renewed efforts come amid a cautious thaw in border tensions, with both nations reiterating their commitment to stabilising ties and promoting people-to-people engagement.
