India celebrates Teachers’ Day on Dr. Radhakrishnan’s birthday to honour educators’ vital role in shaping futures.
Every year on 5 September, India celebrates Teachers' Day to honour its teachers. This day is dedicated to those who give direction to the minds of children and shape their lives. This date pays tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a great philosopher, scholar and second President of the country. When his friends and students expressed their desire to celebrate his birthday, he politely suggested that the day be dedicated to the teachers. This selfless suggestion turned into a national festival in 1962.
Today, Teachers' Day is not just a date recorded on the calendar, but it is a celebration of teachers across the country. On this day, students often offer handmade cards, present special programs or sometimes play the role of teachers and teach for an hour. These small efforts, whether dramas or emotional speech, reflect students' deepest gratitude towards their guides.
This year's theme, "motivating the next generation learners, reflects the changing role of teachers. Today teachers are not only going to give knowledge, but they are such guides who aroused curiosity and confidence in their students.
The life of Dr. Radhakrishnan, which was filled with scholarship and public service, reminds students and citizens that teachers laid the foundation of a strong and more compassionate India. His legacy is still deeply associated - to remind that teaching is not just a profession, but the highest form of service to society.
