The Congress party has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to convene a special session of Parliament following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in 26 fatalities on April 22. In separate letters to the Prime Minister, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi urged the government to bring both Houses together to address the national crisis.
In his letter, Kharge stressed that a special session would enable Parliament to stand united against terrorism and convey the country's unwavering commitment to confronting such threats. He stated that the Opposition believes unity is critical at this moment. "In times like these, when solidarity is vital, we believe it is imperative to convene both Houses of Parliament without delay. Doing so will send a strong message of our shared determination to confront the horrific attack in Pahalgam that targeted innocent civilians. We sincerely hope that the session will be called promptly," Kharge wrote.
Rahul Gandhi’s Appeal to PM Modi
Rahul Gandhi has also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to convene a special session of both Houses of Parliament without delay. In his letter, the senior Congress leader highlighted the need for national unity in the face of terror. He stated that the recent attack in Pahalgam has deeply shocked the nation and that now, more than ever, India must stand together. "The Pahalgam terror attack has deeply angered every Indian. In this moment of crisis, the country must send a clear message of unity against terrorism. The Opposition believes that Parliament must come together in a special session, allowing elected representatives to express collective determination and solidarity. We urge that this session be held as soon as possible," Gandhi wrote.
Pahalgam Terror Attack
The terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22 claimed the lives of 26 individuals, most of whom were tourists, and left several others injured. It marks one of the deadliest attacks since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. Although the exact death toll has not yet been officially confirmed by the government, the scale of the tragedy has prompted nationwide concern. In response, security forces have intensified operations to locate and neutralize the perpetrators. The region, typically bustling with tourists, now bears the signs of heightened security, with deserted streets and ongoing search efforts dominating the scene.
