The Bombay High Court has issued notices to the Mumbai Police and Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel over a plea by comedian Kunal Kamra seeking to quash an FIR filed against him for allegedly calling Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde a "traitor" during a comedy show. A bench of Justices Sarang Kotwal and S M Modak scheduled the hearing for April 16, 2025.
Kamra’s petition argues that the FIR violates his rights to free speech and liberty, as his remarks were part of political satire on the 2022 Shiv Sena split.
Despite being summoned thrice, Kamra has not appeared before police, citing threats to his safety. Residing in Tamil Nadu since 2021, he has offered to cooperate via video call.
His legal team maintains the case is a misuse of legal process against comedic expression. The Madras High Court granted Kamra interim anticipatory bail until April 17 and protection from arrest or seizure of devices, pending further investigation. The contested show was recorded and uploaded online in March 2025.
