Warner Bros Discovery is set to lay off approximately 10% of its motion picture group workforce as part of a broader restructuring ahead of the company’s planned split into two separate entities, according to a source familiar with the matter. The layoffs will impact departments including marketing, distribution, production, and others, though the exact number of affected employees was not disclosed.

In a memo addressed to staff, Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca explained that the company began evaluating the film division’s operations in early 2025. The assessment led to the conclusion that significant changes were necessary to transform the business, particularly as the company moves from a U.S.-centered home office/international model to a fully global organizational structure.

The layoffs reflect a broader trend among media companies, many of which are reconfiguring themselves to stay competitive in the evolving streaming landscape. Warner Bros Discovery recently revealed its plans to divide into two independently traded companies. One, named Warner Bros, will include the film studio and the HBO Max streaming platform. The other, Discovery Global, will encompass cable networks like CNN and TNT, along with the Discovery+ streaming service.

The restructuring comes after a challenging year for the Warner Bros film division, which faced major box office disappointments in 2024 with titles such as *Joker: Folie à Deux* and *Furiosa.* However, the studio has seen a turnaround in 2025 with successful releases like *A Minecraft Movie*, *Sinners*, and *Superman*, offering hope for renewed momentum.

The leadership emphasized that these organizational changes are essential for aligning the company’s film operations with a global strategy and preparing it for its next phase as part of a more focused, competitive entertainment business.
