High Court Halts Kerala Story 2 Release CBFC Scrutiny Intensifies

Date: Feb 27, 2026 | Source: Fela News

Just hours before it was scheduled to release in theatres, The Kerala Story 2 Goes Beyond faced a sudden legal setback. The Kerala High Court issued an interim stay on the film’s release, raising serious concerns about how the certification was granted. The court observed what it described as a non application of mind by the Central Board of Film Certification while approving the movie with a U A certificate.

The film was supposed to hit screens on February 27, 2026, but petitions were filed arguing that the content could disturb public order and potentially create communal disharmony. The petitioners claimed that certain scenes and promotional material might negatively influence perceptions about specific communities. These concerns pushed the matter into urgent legal hearing.

During proceedings, the court noted that the certification process appeared cursory and not deeply examined. Judges indicated that when a film deals with sensitive social themes, authorities must carefully evaluate the possible impact. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has now been asked to re examine the certification process within a set time frame.

The producers, led by filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah, defended the film strongly. They argued that artistic freedom should not be compromised and that the movie was being unfairly targeted. According to them, the film presents a narrative that deserves to be seen and judged by audiences rather than being halted before release.

Interestingly, even after the stay order, reports suggested that ticket bookings had already started in some theatres. This created confusion among cinema owners and viewers who were unsure whether the release would proceed or remain suspended.

The Kerala Story franchise has been surrounded by debate since its first installment. Supporters call it bold storytelling, while critics argue it touches extremely sensitive topics in a divisive way. With the sequel now under judicial scrutiny, the situation once again raises broader questions about censorship, responsibility, and creative liberty in a diverse democracy.

For now the film remains paused, waiting for further clarity from the court. Whether it will release after review or face further delays is something that audiences and industry observers are watching very closely.
