Actor-comedian Vir Das has stirred online debate after defending influencers who attended the Cannes Film Festival, pushing back against criticism from some Bollywood figures. His remarks about the film industry’s “hypocrisy” have sparked mixed reactions. Das noted that certain film personalities were dismissive of influencers appearing on the Cannes 2025 red carpet, especially those artists who don’t traditionally belong to the festival’s elite circle. In a detailed social media post, he expressed support for these influencers.
The Delhi Belly star admitted he didn’t expect to defend influencers but felt some in the film world were excessively elitist. Recognizing the value and exposure the Cannes red carpet provides, especially for those collaborating with lesser-known designers, he acknowledged the appeal and visibility it brings. While red carpet appearances may not be his style, he praised the “underdog energy” of influencers who work hard to reach that stage. Taking a swipe at the film industry’s double standards, Das suggested that those upset about influencers at Cannes should stop promoting their films through influencer platforms or podcasts. He compared this discomfort to how audiences often feel when celebrities share mundane details on influencer channels.
Das ended his post by saying that although influencers may not fit the conventional celebrity mold of attractiveness or fashion, they can sometimes be more engaging than film stars.

The internet responded with a mix of praise and criticism. Many applauded Das for speaking out, including Nikhil Taneja, founder of youth media outlet Yuvaa. Some commenters joked about how Vir Das often plays the role of the outspoken truth-teller. However, critics argued that Cannes is meant to celebrate the best in global cinema, and influencers’ presence shifts focus away from films to fashion and designer labels. They claimed that if influencers are only there to show off outfits, their role as influencers loses value.
This isn’t Das’s first jab at Cannes; he previously joked about skipping the festival due to a new dress code, humorously mentioning that his planned 78-foot-long nude gown was now banned.
