Rachel Gupta, the 21-year-old Miss Grand International 2024 winner, has sparked controversy after announcing her resignation from the title. On May 28, Rachel posted on Instagram that she was stepping down due to a “toxic environment and broken promises” during her reign. The following day, she shared a video on her YouTube channel titled “The Truth about Miss Grand International – My Story,” where she detailed her difficult experience over the past seven months.

Rachel described being forced to live in a cramped Thai hotel room for a month after her win, then being confined to a house without food or basic amenities. She accused the Miss Grand International organisers of constantly pressuring her about her weight and body image, which damaged her self-esteem and mental health. Rachel claimed the organisation only cared about her appearing at events and promoting products on TikTok, saying, “They don’t care if I live or die, as long as I smile and keep my body skinny like they want.” She added that the organisation made them sell cheap, low-quality products on TikTok to generate revenue.

Rachel also shared a disturbing incident where a representative of the organisers physically pinched her, telling her to lose weight in certain areas, which she found humiliating. Despite asking for basic support like access to a gym or a yoga mat, she said her requests were largely ignored, leaving her to fend for herself. She revealed that countries could pay to secure votes in the pageant, which she felt created unfair competition. Additionally, she raised concerns about the organisation’s handling of serious issues, including a sexual harassment case involving a former titleholder.

In her YouTube caption, Rachel expressed hope that speaking out would help others who dream of such titles. She emphasized that stepping down was a decision made with integrity and self-respect, despite the challenges involved. Rachel is the first Indian to win the Miss Grand International crown, having earned the title last year.
