Kriti Sanon calls out subtle gender bias in Bollywood, like preferential perks for male actors.
Kriti Sanon, Bollywood’s quietly assertive talent, recently opened up about a bias that’s small but telling. In a candid chat with media, she shared that even minor privileges like better cars or more comfortable rooms are often reserved for male actors. It’s not the luxury it’s how it makes her “feel smaller,” she explained, calling for simple equality on set.
She also highlighted everyday routines that reinforce stereotypes: assistants calling female actors first, waiting on males to arrive. According to her, these are not isolated incidents but symptoms of a deeper mindset that treats women as secondary. “The mindset needs to change,” she asserted.
Digging deeper, Kriti traced her awareness to her upbringing. Raised in a progressive household, her parents shared household chores and propelled both daughters to dream without gendered limits. Her mother, who had to fight just to pursue an education, inspired Kriti to dream bigger and to expect fairness.
As UNFPA India’s honorary ambassador for Gender Equality, Kriti now converts personal experiences into advocacy. Her message is firm yet gentle: Equity isn’t about grand statements it’s the small, daily actions that count. From homes to film sets, respecting women begins with everyday fairness.
Her words resonate beyond the glitz. They echo a growing movement toward change in Bollywood from pay parity to equal treatment on the smallest scales. And in that, perhaps, lies the path to a more inclusive cinematic future.
