aran Sharma’s directorial debut Bhool Chuk Maaf, a romantic comedy starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has turned out to be a surprise hit at the Indian box office. Despite being a first-time filmmaker, Sharma has responsible for creating a film that not only connected with audiences but also crossed the Rs 58 crore mark in just two weeks. The movie had a strong second weekend, with collections picking up from Friday to Sunday, where it earned Rs 6.25 crore on the last day of the weekend.

The film has already outperformed several other 2024 titles, such as The DiplomatGame Changer (Hindi version), Sanam Teri Kasam (re-release), and Deva. While it is unlikely to touch the impressive Rs 90 crore collection of Sunny Deol’s JaatBhool Chuk Maaf has proven its strength in a crowded market.

Adding to the drama, the film was at the center of a legal dispute between PVR INOX and Maddock Films. Initially set for a May 9 theatrical release with an eight-week gap before delectronic streaming, the producers rapidly changed plans due to national security tensions and shifted to an OTT-first strategy. This move upset the multiplex chain, who claimed it violated their agreement. Eventually, both sides reached a compromise the film was released in cinemas on May 23 and will arrive on Prime Video India on June 6, just two weeks later.

With big releases like Housefull 5 and Thug Life arriving in early June, Bhool Chuk Maaf has limited time to grow further in theatres. Still, its current success is impressive for a novice director and a mid-budget film. Whether or not it hits bigger turning point, it has already made a strong mark.
