The nutritionist gave his opinion on 40% GST on sugar -rich drinks in India, highlighted health and policy concerns.
The Indian government recently announced the imposition of 40% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on energy drinks and soft drinks, which gave rise to debate in both the public and professional classes. While the move aims to reduce the consumption of sugarcane drinks, health and nutritionists are offering a balanced approach on this policy.
Nutritionist Sanya Panwar commented that even though GST hike may reduce some purchase, it cannot solve the root causes of unhealthy dietary habits completely. He said, "This step is not just a tax policy; it is more a sin tax policy." According to Panwar, depending on taxation only, there may be uneven load on the lower-or-come groups, and there will be no effective change in the consumed pattern in a long time.
Experts argue that a holistic approach is required. Increasing tax on sugar only on sugar will not educate the public about a balanced diet or the benefits of health options. Strategies such as awareness campaigns, nutrition education and easy access to healthy drinks can help consumers to make informed decisions.
In addition, Panwar also underlines that lifestyle factors such as physical activity, food plans and sleep quality also play an important role in weight management and overall health. Therefore, policies controlling sugar consumption should include several supportive measures instead of focusing only taxation.
While the GST hike may influence buying habits temporarily, nutritionists emphasize that a comprehensive approach combining policy, education, and lifestyle adjustments is key to fostering long-term healthier habits. Consumers and policymakers alike will be watching closely to see if this taxation move achieves its intended health outcomes or requires further complementary measures.
