Microsoft Layoffs: Microsoft to lay off 6,000 employees, its second-largest job cut ever. The move targets managerial roles as part of cost-cutting and increase
Microsoft Layoffs: After Google, tech giant Microsoft is now planning to lay off around 6,000 employees, which accounts for nearly 3% of its total workforce. Employees at all levels will be affected, and the move is expected to have a significant impact on the company. Previously, in 2023, Microsoft had laid off 10,000 employees, making this the second-largest layoff in the company's history.
Microsoft stated that the decision is aimed at making management more streamlined and transparent. As a result, the layoffs will primarily impact employees working in managerial positions.
The company is offering affected employees two options.
First, employees can exit with 60 days of salary and bonuses after their termination. Alternatively, those let go based on performance may be given time for improvement or can opt for the Global Voluntary Separation Agreement, which includes 16 weeks of severance pay.
As of June 2024, Microsoft employed a total of 228,000 people, including 1,985 employees in Washington.
The company said that the move is part of its efforts to control costs and increase investment in artificial intelligence (AI).
Microsoft reiterated that the layoff is part of a broader plan to streamline its management structure, and managerial-level roles will be most affected by this decision.
