Markets Crash as Investors Lose ₹5.5 Lakh Crore Following U.S. Tariff Shock
Investors saw a staggering loss of over ₹5 lakh crore within the first 15 minutes of market opening on Thursday, as Indian equities plunged sharply in response to newly announced U.S. tariffs. According to The Economic Times, the total market capitalisation of companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) dropped by approximately ₹5.5 lakh crore, reaching ₹453.3 lakh crore during morning trading.
All major sectors listed in the Indian benchmark indices opened in the red, with oil and gas stocks among the hardest hit. The BSE Sensex opened with a sharp decline of 786.36 points, falling to 80,695.50, while the broader NSE Nifty 50 dropped 212.8 points to 24,642.25.
Data from the exchanges indicated that Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equity holdings worth ₹850.04 crore on Wednesday, contributing to the downward momentum.
Among the worst-performing stocks were key players in the energy sector, such as Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL), Mahanagar Gas, ONGC, and Gujarat Gas—all of which were trading in negative territory. Other major losers on the Sensex included Reliance Industries, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Bharti Airtel, Titan, and State Bank of India. On the flip side, a few companies like Hindustan Unilever, Powergrid, and Eternal managed to trade in the green.
Asian markets reflected a mixed picture—South Korea’s Kospi, China’s Shanghai Composite Index (SSE), and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index were down, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 showed positive movement, as reported by PTI.
Meanwhile, in currency markets, the Indian rupee bounced back slightly from its record low, gaining 14 paise to reach 87.66 against the U.S. dollar in early trade. The currency had opened at 87.66 and touched a low of 87.74 during initial trading hours.
