Shraddha Walker Murder Case: PIL in Delhi High Court seeks transfer of case to CBI

New Delhi: An advocate has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Delhi High Court seeking a transfer of investigation from the Delhi police to the CBI in the murder of Shraddha Walker, which has captured the nation’s attention.

Joshina Tuli, the petitioner said in the PIL that the Delhi Police have revealed minute and sensitive details regarding their investigation to the media and public which is not permitted by law. Besides, the plea also specified that the presence of media and the public at places of recoveries and court hearings results in ‘interference with the evidence and witnesses’.

“That the abovementioned incident of murder is alleged to have taken place in Delhi and thereafter the body parts have been alleged to have disposed at different places, thus investigation of P.S. Mehrauli cannot efficiently be carried out due to administrative/staff paucity as well as lack of sufficient technical and scientific equipment to find out the evidence and the witnesses as the incident had taken place about 6 months back in May 2022,” the plea argues.

It was further stated that as per statements made by the Delhi Police to the media, the accused will be taken to five different states in furtherance of the investigation. Hence, the case was “inter-state” and beyond the territorial jurisdiction of Delhi Police, the lawyer claimed.

Shraddha Walkar was killed allegedly by her live-in partner Aftab Poonawala at their Delhi flat in May. Poonawala who was arrested last week confessed to the police that he had also allegedly hacked the body into 35 pieces after killing Shraddha

It’s been a week since the details started emerging on the horrific murder of the woman and accusations and Poonawala. He has been accused of assaulting Shraddha throughout the two-three years of their relationship. While he remains in the custody of the police, for now, cops are understood to have stepped up the security arrangements amid massive public anger.

‘Testing Testing Seeing…’: Kanye West back on Twitter, Elon Musk welcomes him

Kanye West whose Twitter profile got suspended for posting antisemitic remarks has returned to the micro-blogging website. This happened a day after billionaire Elon Musk took ownership of the social media company following his $44 billion deal.

The rapper took to his Twitter handle and wrote, “Testing Testing Seeing if my Twitter is unblocked.”

It is still not clear if Musk, who finalized his purchase of Twitter last month, okayed Mr. West’s return. However, he appeared to be welcoming the rapper back to the platform by punning on his recent name change. “Don’t kill what ye hate. Save what ye love,” Mr. Musk wrote responding to Mr. West’s tweet.

In another post, Mr. West also tweeted “Shalom” with a smiley face.

The rapper’s account was banned on October 9 after he said he was going “death con 3 on JEWISH PEOPLE”. It was reinstated earlier this month when Elon Musk’s Twitter purchase went through.

The American rapper first had his Instagram account suspended after a since-removed post in which he invoked antisemitic tropes, accusing a musician of being controlled by the “Jewish people”.

Last month, before the acquisition of the company, when Mr. Musk revealed that Mr. West’s Twitter account was restored, the rapper wrote, “they did not consult with or inform him,” in response to a question.

Meanwhile, Mr West’s latest tweet comes after Twitter on Friday also restored the account of former US President Donald Trump, who had been banned from the platform since January 2021, following a Twitter poll conducted by Mr Musk. “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” the “Chief Twit” wrote. More than 15 million people – out of 237 million daily Twitter users – voted on the poll. While 51.8 percent voted in favour of reinstating Mr Trump’s account, 48.2 percent voted against it.

Chhawla Rape Case: Delhi govt to challenge Supreme Court order to free convicts

New Delhi: After Supreme Court ordered the release of three convicts sentenced to death in the 2012 Chhawla gang rape-murder case, the Arvind-Kejriwal-led Delhi government is set to challenge the order. VK Saxena, Delhi Lieutenant Governor has approved Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) request to file a review petition challenging the acquittal of the three men.

The three men were accused of abducting, raping, and killing the 19-year-old woman in February 2012 in Delhi’s Chhawla. Her body was recovered from a field in Haryana three days later with multiple injuries. Severe wounds suggested that she was hit with car tools and earthen pots.

A Delhi court in February 2014 convicted the accused and awarded them the death penalty. The capital punishment was confirmed by the Delhi High Court on August 26, 2014, saying they were “predators” moving on the streets and “were looking for prey”.

India will become world’s second largest economy by 2050: Gautam Adani

India will become world’s second largest economy by 2050: Gautam Adani

Mumbai: Asia’s richest man Gautam Adani today said India, which took 58 years to become a trillion-dollar economy, will add an equivalent sum to GDP every 12-18 months and will be the world’s second-largest economy by 2050.

Speaking at the 21st World Congress of Accountants, he said back-to-back global crises have challenged several assumptions, including that China should adopt western democratic principles, secular principles are universal, the EU would stay together, and Russia would be forced to accept a reduced international role.

“This multilevel crisis has shattered the myth of a unipolar or a bipolar world of superpowers that could step in and stabilize global environments,” he said.

“In my view- in this emerging multipolar world – superpowers will need to be those that take responsibility to step in and help others in a crisis and not bully other nations into submission, those that keep humanity as their foremost operating principle.” A superpower, he said, must also be a thriving democracy and yet believe that “there is no one uniform style of democracy.” “The style of capitalism that drives growth for the sake of growth and ignores the social fabric of a society is rightfully facing its greatest pushback ever,” he said.

Gautam Adani, 60, said the foundations of India’s increasing economic might have become relevant and a majority government has given the nation the ability to initiate several structural reforms in the political and administrative system.

“It took us 58 years to get to our first trillion dollars of GDP, 12 years to get to the next trillion, and just five years for the third trillion.

“Given the pace at which the government has been executing a vast multitude of simultaneous social and economic reforms, I anticipate that within the next decade, India will start adding a trillion dollars to its GDP every 12 to 18 months – thereby putting us well on track to be a USD 30 trillion economies by 2050 and with a stock market capitalization that will possibly exceed USD 45 trillion,” he said.

India is currently the world’s fifth-largest economy with a gross domestic product (GPD) of USD 3.5 trillion. In comparison, the US is a USD 23 trillion economy with a stock market capitalization ranging from USD 45 to 50 trillion.

“A country, crushed and drained by its colonial rulers, today stands on the cusp of extraordinary growth and is the only major country on a path to emerge as a high-income nation without compromising its democracy and diversity,” he said.

“Well before 2030, we will be the world’s third-largest economy and, thereafter, the world’s second-largest economy by 2050.” In purchasing power parity (PPP), India’s share of global GDP will be north of 20 per cent by 2050.

“India’s success story of combining economic growth and democracy has no parallel. If there ever were a time to be Indian, be in India, and associate with India – it is now. The foundation to build a new resilient India has already been laid,” he said.

Gautam Adani saw India’s median age at just 38 years in 2050, population of 1.6 billion with a per capita income of USD 16,000, over 700 per cent higher than current per capita income.

FDI will touch a trillion dollar, in sign of increasing global confidence in India.

“In 2021, India added a unicorn every 9 days. It executed the largest number of real-time financial transactions globally – a staggering 48 billion. This was 6 times greater than the US, Canada, France, and Germany combined,” he said adding this year VC funding will exceed USD 50 billion, a 50x acceleration in 8 years.

Gautam Adani, whose ports-to-energy conglomerate is investing USD 70 billion over the next decade in a new energy value chain, said India can become a net green-energy exporter by 2050.

“As both domestic companies and multinationals take advantage of India’s market size, we will need stronger mandates wherein corporates are compelled to rise to the challenge of enabling a social structure that recognizes the core of our culture and is aligned with our national needs,” he said.

“India cannot be just seen as a land for ‘making and taking’ profits out of its geographic boundaries. This is why I said that the superpowers in the multipolar world must recognize that there is no one size of democracy that fits all.”

‘What did he want? Encouragement?’ Gavaskar on Kohli’s ‘Only Dhoni Texted’ comment

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Virat Kohli for his statement during the press conference after the Indian team lost against Pakistan in Asia Cup 2022 Super clash. Virat Kohli held a very emotional press conference after scoring 60 against Pakistan.

The former Indian cricket team captain said except for MS Dhoni nobody got in touch with him after he quit Test captaincy last year.

“I can say one thing that when I announced my resignation from Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person with whom I played earlier, that is MS Dhoni. Many people have my number…many people give suggestions on TV…but the people who had my number, nobody messaged. The respect, the connection that you have with somebody, when that is genuine, it shows this way,” Kohli said.

Former Indian cricket team captain Sunil Gavaskar has now said that the ‘other persons’ who did not get in touch with Kohli should have been ‘named’.

“I don’t know what the dressing room inside situation was with all these other players. Ideally, if he has named one person who got in touch, then maybe the other persons who didn’t get in touch should have also been named. That would have been a little bit fair to everybody concerned, rather than thinking that everybody else didn’t get in touch with him,” Gavaskar said in a discussion with India Today.

Gavaskar added, “What message did he want?” he questioned. “Encouragement? But then he is done with captaincy, so why would he need encouragement? That chapter (captaincy) is already closed,” in a separate discussion with Sports Tak.

He felt rather when one leaves captaincy, the best part is about being able to focus solely on one’s game.

“Now you are playing only as a cricketer. So, focus on that role because when you are the captain, you think about and worry about your mates. Once captaincy is over, it’s time to focus on your own game,” the legendary opener said.

“If Dhoni had given me a chance…”: Ishwar Pandey on playing for India team dream

New Delhi: After the tall fast bowler Ishwar Pandey who played in IPL for Chennai Super Kings announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday, he shared some of his hidden emotions to a reputed media channel. While refreshing some of the past memories, we can’t forget that Ishwar was indeed very close to getting an India cap but the dream remained unfulfilled. In 75 first-class matches, he picked up 263 wickets. He was a star paceman for Madhya Pradesh and also featured for Central Zone and domestic cricket.

In the IPL Ishwar picked up 18 wickets in 25 matches during his stint with CSK, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Pune Warriors.

During an interview with Dainik Bhaskar, Ishwar shared some unrevealed talks about his cricket career. He said that things would have been different had MS Dhoni given him a chance.

“Had Dhoni given me a chance my career would have been something else. I was 23-24 year old at that time and my fitness was great. Had Dhoni given me a chance to play for India and if I had performed then my career would have been different,” Pandey said.

Ishwar announced his retirement on Instagram and wrote, “Today the day has come and with a heavy heart, I have decided to retire from International and First class cricket. I began this incredible journey in 2007 and till date I have enjoyed every single moment spent on and off the field. Going back to my early days from how I started to see myself to reach where I am today is immensely satisfying. I feel proud and blessed that I have achieved a bit in my life. Coming from a very small town and to be the first one to make it to Indian cricket team from Rewa (MP) was always a dream and to achieve that will always be my biggest achievement.

“From getting up early in the morning, riding my cycle 20 kms every day in the morning and evening for my training, thinking about cricket 24/7 — it was a struggle which I will forever cherish. It was an honour to be a part of the Indian team for the test series against England and New Zealand. Though I was not fortunate enough to play a game for my country but still to be part of Indian team will always be the most special memory of my life. I still feel bad that I couldn’t get a game to play for my country and I will always be known as a uncapped Indian cricket player.”

“To share dressing room with modern day greats like Virat Kohli, M S Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was very special and to have played a match against Legend Sachind Tendulkar Sir was like a dream come true. I started watching cricket because of him and I have always admired him since my childhood.

“Thanks to Rising Pune super giants for giving me the IPL exposure for the first time. It was a huge opportunity for me to play against the biggest global stars in the most loved T20 league in the world.

“I would like to thank RPSG and CSK for further selecting me. To be a part of CSK team and to play IPL finals and winning Champions league was special. I absolutely loved my time playing for CSK for 2 years under the guidance of MSD and Stephen Fleming.

“To have a successful journey there are many people who provide you the support and guidance in the background. I would like to thank BCCI, my state association Madhya Pradesh cricket association for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to do well for my state and various teams I played for. MPCA gave me the platform to make my name and fulfill all my childhood dreams,” he further wrote.

He ended the emotional note by thanking his family for their support.

Surat will become safest and most convenient diamond trading hubs in world: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Surat will emerge among the world’s safest and most convenient diamond trading hubs once the Diamond Research and Mercantile (DREAM) City project is completed. He said Surat has progressed rapidly over the last 20 years while recalling the struggle to get an airport for the city when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. Modi said his government was tired while explaining the need for setting up an airport in Surat to the then Congress-led government at the Centre.

“Today, many people come and go from the airport here and it has helped in the city’s development. This is the benefit of the double engine government,” he said, referring to the Bharatiya Janata Party governments at both Centre and in the state.

Modi was speaking after inaugurating the Phase-I of road infrastructure works and the main entrance of DREAM City. He also laid foundation stones and inaugurated projects worth over ₹3400 crores in Surat.

The DREAM City project has been launched to meet the growing demand for commercial and residential space to complement Surat’s growth.

Modi spoke about the infrastructure development and said the road connectivity from the city to the airport reflects the culture, prosperity, and modernity of Surat.

He laid the foundation stone for a Biodiversity Park being built over 87 hectares and inaugurated Khoj Museum at Science Centre in Surat for children.

Modi, who is on a two-day visit to poll-bound Gujarat, said 125000 people from Surat are among over 40 million people, who have got free medical treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Scheme. He added over 3.2 million patients from Gujarat have overall benefitted from the scheme.

India will buy crude oil from wherever it wants, no one told us not to buy from Russia: Hardeep Singh Puri

0
India will soon have 2nd largest metro network of the world: Hardeep S Puri

New Delhi: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said that India will buy crude oil from whichever country it wanted in regards to questions being raised about purchases from Russia, whose western buyers have either stopped buying from it or are reducing their orders as punishment for invading Ukraine.

On the 2-million barrel a day production cut announced by OPEC+ countries (which include most of India’s top sellers), the Minister on Friday added that he would wait for effective the cut to assess the impact on India; the real reduction is by 900,000 barrels a day, according to oil analysts. But he said generally, global supply falling short of the demand would fuel recession.

Puri, who also holds the portfolio of Housing and Urban Development, arrived in Washington DC on Thursday and held a wide of range of meetings with his counterpart in the Biden cabinet, Jennifer Granholm — their first in-person meeting — and other officials such as the US special envoy on Energy Amos Hochstein. He is scheduled to meet energy business leaders in Houston, where he is reaching on Saturday.

India has been under pressure from the US-led West to cut its energy buys from Russia. It has stepped up its purchases, instead, to take advantage of the heavy discounts offered by Moscow.

“Look, let me make it very clear. India will buy oil from wherever it has to for the simple reason that this kind of a discussion cannot be taken to the consuming population of India,” Puri said, addressing a news briefing with reporters of Indian media outlets.

He added, “Have I been told by anyone to stop buying Russian oil, the answer to the categorical No.” But he conceded such discussions can take place in a geopolitical context.

On OPEC cuts, the Minister sounded circumspect, saying he would wait before offering any assessment of the impact on India. He was also cautious as the OPEC+ group included countries that are India’s top suppliers such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates.

But he did offer criticism in a general sense. “I think everybody has to realize that the producer has the sovereign right to decide how much quantity they want to release. They say that doesn’t affect the price. It is their judgment. I would respectfully submit that I have a different view. If you release quantities that are much shorter it will result in you know driving up prices which in turn exacerbates the inflationary situation and which will make result in deepening the recessionary condition and make no mistake large parts of Europe today,” he said.

But he sounded confident India will be able to deal with it as it has in similar situations before.

Asked about the possibility of the US cutting exports to India — as part of an all-around ban on exports reportedly being considered by the Biden administration as a response to the OPEC+ cuts, the Minister sounded confident it may not play out that way.

“Today we are buying $20 billion of energy products from them,” he said, adding the US would “want to sell more to India”.
