Bilkis Bano moves Supreme Court against release of 11 convicts

New Delhi: Bilkis Bano has approached the Supreme Court challenging the release of 11 men convicted of gang-raping her and killing her family in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The convicts were freed on August 15, Independence Day, by the Gujarat government under a past remission policy. The move sparked massive nationwide outrage, especially when images showed the rapists being garlanded and welcomed like heroes by a Hindu organization.

The Supreme Court had said, on the petition of one of the convicts, that the Gujarat government could consider releasing him under the 1992 remission policy.

Based on that ruling, the Gujarat government released all 11 men. The Centre had also fast-tracked the release, clearing Gujarat’s move within two weeks.

It would not have been possible if the Gujarat government had gone by the 2014 remission policy, which bars the release of rape and murder convicts.

Bilkis Bano has said in her petition that Maharashtra, not Gujarat, should decide on releasing the men.

Bilkis Bano was 21 when she was gang-raped by the men, who killed nine members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter, during the 2002 riots that swept through Gujarat after the Godhra train burning in which 59 pilgrims died.

Her petition comes a day before Gujarat votes in the first of two rounds.

World Cup 2022: Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana sent home from tournament

Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana was sent home from the World Cup on Tuesday for disciplinary reasons after a dispute with coach Rigobert Song. The Inter Milan goalkeeper was “temporarily suspended” from the team, the Cameroon soccer federation said in a statement, and the suspension would cover the rest of the tournament in Qatar. The federation said it had booked Onana a flight back to Milan.

Onana had already been spotted earlier Tuesday at the airport in Doha.

Onana also released a statement referring to his disagreement with Song over team tactics that led to him being dropped for Cameroon’s 3-3 draw with Serbia on Monday.

Onana said he had tried to resolve the issues in a bid to stay at the World Cup.

“I have put all my efforts and energy into finding solutions to a situation that a footballer often experiences, but there has been no will on the other side,” Onana said. “Some moments are difficult to assimilate.”

Onana said he respected the decisions “of the people in charge.”

Onana had played in Cameroon’s opening game at the World Cup, a 1-0 loss to Switzerland, but was dropped for the Serbia game and didn’t travel with the rest of the squad to Al Janoub Stadium. Cameroon fought back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 without its No. 1 goalkeeper.

Song said it was a risk to play with reserve goalkeeper Devis Epassy but insisted he had to take “strong action” against the 26-year-old Onana, one of Cameroon’s best players.

“If you can’t fit in with what’s required to be part of a squad then I do think that you need to step up to the plate and accept responsibility for that because the team, the squad, is more important than the interests of any individual,” Song said Monday after the Serbia game without going into details of his disagreement with Onana.

Song said he needed all his players to “show discipline and respect.”

In his statement, Onana said he was disappointed that he was “not allowed” to be with the team at the Serbia game and denied that he had broken any squad disciplinary rules.

“I always behaved in a way to lead the team to success in a good manner,” Onana said.

Cameroon still has a chance of qualifying for the last 16 at the World Cup but needs to beat top-ranked Brazil in its final Group G game and hope that the result of the Switzerland-Serbia match goes in its favor.

Song is a former captain of Cameroon who was appointed coach in February in a surprise to some after Toni Conceicao guided the team to third place at this year’s African Cup of Nations and only missed reaching the final in a penalty shootout loss to Egypt.

The president of the Cameroon soccer federation is Samuel Eto’o, a former teammate of Song on the national team.

Japan court rules same-sex marriage ban is not unconstitutional

A court said on Wednesday that Japan’s ban on same-sex marriage was constitutional, delivering a blow to LGBTQ rights with the second such ruling in the only G7 nation where same-sex marriage is not permitted.

But in what plaintiffs took as a sign of hope, the Tokyo district court ruling also said the absence of any legal system for same-sex couples to have families was an infringement of their human rights.

Japan’s constitution defines marriage as based on “the mutual consent of both sexes,” and the ruling party of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has disclosed no plans yet to review the matter or propose legislation.

The court ruled that banning same-sex marriage was in line with the constitution, reaching the same conclusion as a court in Osaka in June. A court in Sapporo, northern Japan, last year raised hopes when it ruled the ban was unconstitutional.

Eight people in four couples were involved in the case, saying the same-sex marriage ban contravenes their human rights. They had also demanded 1 million yen each in damages, a demand the court rejected. The decision came a day after the U.S. Senate passed a same-sex marriage protection bill and Singapore lifted a ban on gay sex but limited the prospects for legalising same-sex marriage.

“I’ve been seeing that votes are sought in the name of Modiji, be it municipality elections, corporation elections (or Assembly elections) Ask for a vote in the name of the candidate is Modi going to come and work at the municipality? Is he going to help you in times of your need?”, senior Congress leader said, attacking PM Modi.

Hitting back at Kharge for insulting PM Modi, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya said, “Unable to take the heat of Gujarat election, pushed to the fringe, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge loses control over his words, calls Prime Minister Narendra Modi “Ravan”. From “Maut ka Saudagar” to “Ravan”, Congress continues to insult Gujarat and it’s son.” (sic)

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said that Kharge calling PM Modi Ravana has saddened the entire country and this shows the mindset of Congress.

“Narendra Modi is the pride of Gujarat and has been working for the development of each and every citizen. These are merely words of Mallikarjun and the ideology is of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. Remember who called Narendra Modi ‘Maut ka Saudagar’? Madhusudan Mistry said he will show Narendra Modi his place his ‘Aukaat’,” Patra said.

“What ‘Aukaat’ will you show Soniaji? Every Gujarati should teach a lesson to this Congress party which has used such words against the Pride of Gujarat, Every Gujarati should come out and vote and teach Congress a lesson,” the BJP leader added.

Earlier, the Congress leader described PM Modi as a ‘leader of lies’ and accused him of seeking sympathy by calling himself poor. While addressing a public rally at Dediapada in poll-bound Gujarat’s Narmada district, the veteran Congress leader said he himself comes from the “untouchable caste.”

New Delhi: As per a police source quoted by Dainik Jagran, Aftab Amin Poonawalla, the prime accused in Shraddha Walkar murder case has made stunning revelations during the polygraph test. According to the police official, he has stated that even if he is hanged for the murder of Shraddha, he would not be sorry since he will be remembered as a hero when he enters paradise and will be offered ‘Hoors’ in ‘Jannat.’ Aftab also admitted to having affairs with over 20 Hindu girls during his relationship with Shraddha. Aftab’s radical worldview was reportedly on display in his police statement during the polygraph test.

The police officer said that Aftab made these revelations following the questioning. He said that he had used the Bumble app to target Hindu women and lure them into a trap. After murdering Shraddha, Aftab had also invited a psychologist to his apartment. She was also a Hindu woman. He admitted to having given her a ring which belonged to Shraddha, in a bid to lure her into relationship. He also interacted with a number of other Hindu girls.

He said he didn’t feel bad about killing Shraddha and mutilating her body. After the questioning, he used to fall asleep easily. He allegedly told police that his plan was to kill Shraddha and slice her up in Mumbai itself.

According to the police officer, Aftab confessed some stunning truths during the polygraph examination. The police seek to establish these findings following the narco test. The information provided by Aftab during the polygraph is very helpful to the investigation. After the test, five knives were found in his residence. In addition, it’s anticipated that further proof will be acquired soon.

The polygraph examination will be followed by the narco test. Notably, Aftab has consented to a narco test. Notably, during the police interrogation, Aftab gave contradictory statements, prompting Delhi Police to conduct the narco test. New Delhi: The AIIMS in Delhi continues to work in manual mode for a week now, after a hack attack crashed the server-based system. Investigators suspect a terror angle and foreign conspiracy behind the cyber-attack on the country’s premier medical institution.

Important Facts

  • Two system analysts have been suspended by AIIMS after being served show-cause notices for alleged dereliction of duty.
  • Police have denied reports that hackers asked for ₹ 200 crore in cryptocurrency as ransom to restore the system at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, on November 23.
  • From system of online appointments to the billing and sharing of reports with patients and between departments, almost all services are online at the institute, thus affected.
  • AIIMS authorities have deployed additional staff to run the diagnostics, labs and OPD services. Registers are being used for entries, which is why the movement of documents — such as lab reports and receipts or confirmations — is taking time. Many of the staff are working overtime.
  • Patient data theft is at the nub of the case. The FIR includes sections dealing with extortion and cyber-terrorism. The extortion angle sparked theories that it was a ransomware attack. Every year, around 38 lakh patients get treated at AIIMS, and all of the data is lost for now, sources said. This means details of crores of patients, including top political leaders, bureaucrats and judges.
  • Top intelligence agencies and officials from the National Investigation Agency, too, have visited AIIMS and are working the case, sources said. The National Informatics Centre and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team are trying to restore the data.
  • So far, of the 5,000-odd computers at AIIMS, around 2,000 have been thoroughly scanned using anti-virus and anti-malware software. Thirty out of 50 servers have been scanned and this activity is ongoing 24×7.
  • Medical Superintendent Dr DK Sharma has said the patient numbers have gone up since the day the server went down — almost 12,000 patients a day now – as people are not required to take an online appointment now.
  • “The data restoration and server cleaning [are] taking some time due to the volume of data and a large number of servers for the hospital services. Measures are being taken for cyber security,” said AIIMS in a statement on Monday.
  • Internet services are likely to remain suspended as the investigation agencies want a thorough cleanse. On Monday, news agency PTI reported, quoting a source: “The full sanitisation of the network is likely to continue for five more days. Thereafter, e-hospital services can be rolled out in a phased manner.”

Painkillers that you use may worsen your joint inflammation!

Millions of people who take widely prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen and ibuprofen to ease joint pain may unintentionally increase swelling and discomfort in their knees over time, a new study suggests. The study focused on people with moderate to severe knee osteoarthritis, a condition that typically develops with advanced age as wear and tear on the body erodes cartilage in the joint and makes movement painful. Scientists studied 277 people who took nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for at least one year to manage their pain and a control group of 793 people who didn’t use these medicines.

READ | 5 simple & effective tips to make your diet healthier

At the start of the study, all of the participants had detailed MRI scans of their knees. People using NSAIDs had worse cartilage quality and joint inflammation than individuals who weren’t taking these drugs, according to preliminary results of research to be presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

There was no long-term benefit to taking NSAIDs based on subsequent scans. After four years, cartilage quality and joint inflammation got even worse for people in the NSAID group, according to the preview of the study results.

“NSAIDs are frequently used to treat pain, but it is still an open discussion of how NSAID use influences outcomes for osteoarthritis patients,” lead author Johanna Luitjens, MD, of the department of radiology and biomedical imaging at the University of California in San Francisco, said in a statement.

READ | 7 health benefits of having bitter gourd

“In this large group of participants, we were able to show that there were no protective mechanisms from NSAIDs in reducing inflammation or slowing down progression of osteoarthritis of the knee joint,” Luitjens said.

While the study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how NSAIDs might directly cause increased cartilage breakdown and joint inflammation in the knees, there are several possible explanations, Luitjens said.

One possibility is that NSAIDs simply fail to prevent what’s known as synovitis, or swelling and pain in the connective tissue that lines joints like the knee, hip, ankle, and shoulder, Luitjens said. Another potential explanation is that NSAIDs do relieve pain, enabling people to continue with physical activities that increase wear and tear on the knee joint over time.

NSAIDs are a family of medicines that include aspirin, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), and naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve). Many types of NSAIDs are available over-the-counter without a prescription at lower doses, and by prescription for higher doses. They’re commonly used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent blood from clotting. Side effects can include upset stomach and bleeding.
