US rejected Rana's plea to stay ahead of his extradition to India. This was in response to Trump and Modi's meeting where they asserted all crime must be erased
The US Supreme Court has rejected Tahawwur Rana’s plea to get a stay on his extradition to India. His plea was rejected by Justice Elena Kagan. However, Rana’s lawyer has filed a new emergency request asking it to be reviewed by the Chief Justice.
In his emergency application to the Supreme Court, Rana argued that he would face extreme torture if he were to go to India since he's a Muslim of Pakistani origin. Rana’s petition claimed that his extradition to India violates US law and the UN Convention Against Torture, saying he would be brutally treated.
Who is Tahawwur Rana?
Rana holds Canadian citizenship has Pakistani origins, and is closely associated with the Mumbai attacks (26/11) which resulted in 174 fatalities. He was found guilty in the United States of providing support to the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
