WHO and Ministry of Ayush to Host Inaugural Global Summit on Traditional Medicine

The inaugural global summit on traditional medicine is set to take place in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on August 17-18. Co-hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Ayush, this event aims to leverage India’s extensive expertise in traditional medicine.

The summit will provide a platform for experts and practitioners to explore the latest scientific advancements and evidence-based knowledge in the traditional medicine sector. With the overarching objective of ensuring holistic health and well-being for all, the event will convene a diverse range of participants.

The inauguration of the summit will be led by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, along with the presence of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Distinguished attendees include G20 health ministers, WHO regional directors, experts from around the world, traditional medicine practitioners, health workers, and members of civil society organizations.

Union Minister of State for Ayush, Munjpara Mahendrabhai Kalubhai, emphasized that the summit’s outcomes will contribute to shaping the future of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine. The event’s significance is underscored by its occurrence following the foundation laying ceremony of the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar last year.

A series of discussions will be led by prominent speakers, focusing on key areas such as research, evidence, learning, policy, data, regulation, innovation, digital health, biodiversity, equity, and traditional healthcare knowledge.

The summit also includes a comprehensive exhibition showcasing Traditional Medicine’s global reach and its interconnectedness with the natural environment, symbolized by the ‘Kalpavriksha’. The exhibition highlights scientific and technological advancements driven by regional centers of WHO and the Ministry of Ayush.
