Vintage Photo of Chinese President Xi Jinping at Golden Gate Bridge Surfaces During APEC Summit

A nostalgic image of Chinese President Xi Jinping posing at the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in the United States has surfaced online, capturing the attention of social media users. The photo, taken decades ago, reveals a younger Xi Jinping smiling with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. The picture gained prominence as Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden met in San Francisco for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying shared the vintage photograph on X (formerly Twitter), disclosing that President Biden presented the image to President Xi on his cellphone during their recent summit. In her post, Hua Chunying shared the exchange between the leaders, with Biden asking Xi if he recognized the young man in the photo. Xi Jinping responded, saying, “Oh yes, this was 38 years ago.”

The post has garnered widespread attention, amassing over 1.1 million views and 7,500 likes since its publication. Social media users expressed hopes for improved China-US relations, global peace, and emphasized the significance of mutual understanding and cooperation between powerful leaders.

The APEC summit provided an opportunity for President Biden and President Xi to engage in their first in-person meeting in over a year. The leaders explored various topics during their discussions, agreeing on the restoration of high-level military communications and addressing the risks associated with advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. While acknowledging areas of cooperation, concerns were raised by President Biden about alleged human rights abuses in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, and the Taiwan issue was also discussed.

Despite the serious topics covered, there were lighter moments during the summit. President Biden reminded President Xi of his wife Peng Liyuan’s birthday, coinciding with Biden’s own birthday. The Chinese president, caught off guard, expressed gratitude for the timely reminder, attributing the oversight to being immersed in work. The friendly exchange highlighted both the challenges and opportunities in the complex relationship between the two nations.
