UGC Releases List of Central Universities Granted Graded Autonomy

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has notified the names of universities that have been granted graded autonomy. The list includes the names of eight universities, out of which four universities have been granted category I and the other four, category II.

This is a part of UGC’s initiative to provide autonomy to well-performing universities, following the University Grants Commission (Categorization of Universities for Grant of Graded Autonomy) Regulations, 2018.

The following universities are included in the category I:

  • Central University of Rajasthan
  • Central Sanskrit University, Janakpuri, New Delhi
  • University of Delhi
  • Central University of South Bihar

The following universities are included in category II:

  • University of Hyderabad
  • Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad
  • Central University of Punjab
  • Central University of Himachal Pradesh

In an earlier interview to Education Times, Manish Ratnakar Joshi, secretary, UGC, said that the intention behind the categorising of universities is to reward high-quality institutions and motivate others to go for a higher category ranking. “Universities are categorised in three categories I, II and III based on their NAAC scores and world rankings. The universities that have NAAC score above 3.51 are given Category-I and those between 3.26 to 3.50 are given Category-II; those with scores less than 3.26 fall in Category-III. Category-I universities get certain benefits that are intended to motivate others to improve. Category-1 universities should generate more resources as they get more autonomy, and they can start new programmes on their own and can inform the UGC about them,” says Joshi, explaining that Category-1 universities are automatically given 12B status that enables them to get research grants. “Also, Category-1 universities can directly start ODL courses and inform the commission, category II and III universities have to apply and go through a screening process,” adds Joshi.
